Power over Disease

Power Over Disease and Death (Matthew 9:18-26; Mark 5:21-43; Luke 8:40-56). Because Jesus
was not welcomed in the country of the Gadarenes, He returned to the region of Capernaum, where a
great crowd waited for Him. Jarius, a ruler of the synagogue, came and fell at Jesus’ feet because of his
desperate need. His daughter was dying and he pleaded with Christ to come and heal her. He responded
to the plea, but was interrupted by a woman who suffered from a malady that rendered her ceremonially
unclean for twelve years. The woman touched Jesus and was healed. But Jesus forced her to make a
public confession. During this pause, news came that Jarius’ daughter had died. Hearing this, Jesus said
to Jarius, “Don’t be afraid; just believe, and she will be healed.” Entering the room of the dead girl, He
gave the command “My child, get up!” She stood up. Christ had demonstrated His power over disease
and death.

Power Over Blindness and Demons (Matthew 9:27-34). Jesus healed people without faith. But in this
circumstance, He demanded faith from two blind men who followed Him, crying out, “Have mercy on us,
Son of David!” for they used a messianic title. This miracle not only is a revelation of the Person of
Christ, for only God could restore sight to blind eyes, but also indicates what the Messiah came to do for
Israel. God ruled over blindness and sight (Exodus 4:11; Proverbs 20:12) and could answer prophet’s
prayers to remove and restore human sight (2 Kings 6:18-20). The Jews were spiritually blind and did
not know God. Christ came to reveal God to them. Because they did not turn in faith to Him, their
blindness was not removed.

The casting of the demon out of the dumb man caused a great stir. “Nothing like this has ever been seen
in Israel” said the crowd. Yet, the religious leaders rejected Him and even accused Him of being in
league with Satan. One day in the future Israel will receive a false Christ who will be empowered by
Satan.
